George Korber Obituary

George H. Korber III, 77, went to be with his heavenly father on Tuesday, April 19th, 2022, near his family outside Erie, Colorado. George had been living with dementia for many years.

Born January 11, 1945, in Syracuse NY, he was the son of George H. Korber Jr. and Phyllis M. Teter. George graduated from the first class of Henninger High school, formerly Eastwood High, in 1964. In 1965, he joined the New York Army National Guard and Army Reserves part-time, while beginning his 45 year career with the railroad. He began as a fireman with New York Central, moving up to working most of his career as a locomotive engineer. He also worked part-time for Bristol Laboratories in the early 70’s.

He was married to Carolyn E. Eastman on September 3, 1966, in Barre VT, and they settled down in Bridgeport, NY. They had 2 children, David and Marne, then in 1973, they bought their first house in Bridgeport, NY where their 3rd child, Joanna was born. In 1977, they moved to the Fairmont area of Syracuse where their 4th child was born, Leanne and raised their family there for over 20 years.

George had a fierce love of all things “train”. He was a member of The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET). He saw many rail companies come and go over the years and loved to tell his grandchildren stories of his days on the train. New York Central became Penn Central Railroad, then Conrail in the mid-1970’s, and he retired from CSX in 2009.

He was an avid boater, fisherman and hunter in his younger years. He loved the Yankees, most sports really, but the Yankees were the team that would get him hollering at the TV.

George and Carolyn moved to Castleton, NY in 2004, to be closer to work. In 2013, after retirement, they moved to Southborough, MA, into a wonderful community where they made many friends. George became active in Connect Church as a Sunday morning greeter and as a mentor in his men’s small group. They enjoyed spending a couple months each winter in Florida over the last 10 years.

He is survived by his wife, his children; David Korber (Ellyce), Marne Bottenhorn (Eric), Joanna Bruni (Kris), Leanne Hathaway (Todd), grandchildren; Sarah Korber, Brooks Andrew Bottenhorn, Nathanial Conner Bottenhorn, Josiah Bruni, Zion Bruni, Halden Kunz (Hathaway), Samuel Kunz (Hathaway), Peyton Hathaway, and Zachary Hathaway, his siblings; Sandra Lewandowski (Chester), Cindy Farella (Anthony), Jill Centore (Chris), Alicia Stoutenger (Jim), Kim Korber (Kevin), Terri Parker, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and sibling Robin Korber.

A celebration of his life will be held at The Vineyard Church, 312 Lakeside Rd, Syracuse, NY 13209, on Saturday June 25th, 2022 at 11:00 am. A reception will follow in the Fireplace Room.

Interment will be held at Maple Hill Cemetery, Washington, VT on August 6th, 2022, followed by a small gathering at Washington Baptist Church, Washington, VT.
