Donna Aguero Obituary

Donna Jeanne Aguero, 84, died on May 11, 2022, of broken heart syndrome after the death of her beloved husband, Nestor Louis Aguero, on April 4, 2022. After almost 36 years of marriage, Donna could not remain on earth without Nestor. They are once again dancing together in heaven.

Donna was born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 30, 1937, to Albert Lawrence Lones and Twilo Jeanne Solomon. Donna was an only daughter with seven brothers. She was preceded in death by her two full brothers, Lawrence “Larry” Lones and Ronald “Ronnie” Lones. Donna’s parents divorced when she was young, and she acquired five half-brothers. William “Billy” Lones, Robert “Bobby” Lones, and William “Willy” Bollenbach, all of whom preceded her in death. She is survived by her half-brothers, Roger Lones and Boyd “Bud” Lones.

In her teenage years, Donna moved to Clearwater, Florida, to live with her mother and step-father. There she met her first husband, Floyd Johnson, with whom she had two children, a son and a daughter. The family moved to Winston Salem, North Carolina, for a few years and then settled in Gainesville, Florida, in about 1966 where they raised their children. Donna began working as a grocery store cashier. Her customers adored her and would often wait in line just so they could chat with her at the checkout rather than choosing a shorter line. She was always courteous and cheerful, greeting all of her customers like friends. She proudly retired from the Winn Dixie grocery company after approximately 20 years of service. Following that, she did clerical work for residential apartment communities for several years.

After Donna and Floyd divorced in 1979, Donna met her self-professed, “love of my life,” Nestor Aguero. After several years of dating, Donna and Nestor married on May 15, 1986, eventually resettling in Port Charlotte, FL, where Donna assisted with the end-of-life care of her mother-in-law. Following that, Donna changed careers again, becoming a home caregiver for older adults helping them remain independent in their homes. She was a natural caregiver, and many of her clients became dear friends.

Donna was the epitome of a lady, a woman of deep faith, and a lover of butterflies. She was strong, wise, gentle and kind. Her family meant everything to her. She loved listening to music, watching game shows, especially Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, and reading autobiographical books. She was a Christian, devout in her Baptist faith, and was a member of Family Church Port Charlotte. In the last few years of her life, she became the full-time caregiver for her beloved husband in his declining health.

She is survived by her children, Floyd Thomas Johnson (Lacey) of Melbourne, FL, Cindy Jeanne Kaufman (Michael) of Golden, CO, and step-daughter Robin Tjiong Buchanan (David) of Archer, FL, as well as three grandchildren, Stacey Jeanne Mejia (Sergio), Lindsey Marie Hamilton, and Daniel Thomas Johnson, and her many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be planned by her family at a future date. Those wishing to honor Donna’s memory may do so by making a contribution to the Butterfly Rainforest at the University of Florida.
