Walt Oehlkers Obituary

Walter George Oehlkers, age 91, passed away peacefully at home on March 10, 2024.

Walt was born on January 7, 1933 to George and Martha (Delventhal) Oehlkers in Louisville, CO. He graduated from Boulder High School in 1951. He served in the US Army from 1953-1955 and was a Korean War Veteran. He graduated from the University of Colorado in 1959 with a BS in Civil Engineering.

He met the love of his life, Diane Pritchard, at the University of Colorado in 1955. They were married on September 7, 1957 in Elmhurst, IL.

He started his career with Chicago Bridge and Iron Company in Salt Lake City, UT in 1959. While employed by CB& I, his job included the designing and fabrication of plate steel pressure vessels, which took him to several locations. When working in Memphis, TN for CB& I, he was the Nuclear Quality Assurance Coordinator for 15 years. He retired from Eaton Metal Products of Denver in 1998.

Walt loved the Lord and was always active in the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church. He has served as an elder, trustee, and president the several churches that he attended. He was a member of Eternal Savior Lutheran Church and served as the church’s project manager of the current building.

Walt enjoyed playing bridge, gardening, and photography. He received a Lionel train for his first birthday which created a life long interest in trains and train travel. Walt and Diane enjoyed watching their children and grandchildren play soccer. He helped start the Southeast Memphis Soccer Association and also coached soccer.

During his retirement years, Walt and Diane traveled to Scandinavia and throughout the United States. Alaska and the National Parks were some of their favorite places, especially Rocky Mountain National Park.

Walt is survived by his wife, Diane of 66 years. His sister, Joyce Spaulding. His children Jeffrey (Pamela) Oehlkers, Kathy (Mike) Martinez, and Jennifer (Chris) Loftis. His grandchildren include Nathaniel (Lindsay) Oehlkers, their son Samuel, Rachel Oehlkers, Caleb Oehlkers, Brian Martinez, Sarah Martinez, Katie (Ian) Nichols, Danielle Martinez, her children Cameron and Logan Harns, and Zachary Loftis.  Also, he has several nieces and nephews.

Walt was preceded in death by son, Mark Oehlkers, his parents George and Martha Oehlkers and his brother Kenneth Oehlkers.

Services for Walt will be held on March 16th, 2024 at Eternal Savior Lutheran Church. A public viewing will be from 10:00 am to 11:00am, a funeral services will be from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, with a light reception to follow. A graveside service will be held following the reception at 1:15 pm at Louisville Cemetery.
