Victor J. Hoops Obituary

Vic Hoops was born October 20, 1928, near Hardy Nebraska and graduated from Byron High School in 1946 and then attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa where he received a BA degree in Theology in 1950.  Vic married Lois Wenske, from Edgar, Nebraska on December 25th, 1949.  In the fall of 1950 Vic enrolled in the Evangelical Lutheran Theological Seminary in Columbus, Ohio.  During this time Vic served as an intern at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Butler, Pennsylvania.  Vic graduated from the Seminary in June 1954 with a Bachelor of Divinity.  Vic then did post graduate work in New Testament Studies at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri and received an MST in Pastoral Studies from the Illiff School of Theology in Denver and numerous Chaplaincy Schools at Maxwell Air force Base, Montgomery, Alabama.  Vic was ordained at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Byron, Nebraska in July 1955 with his Uncle Otto Fangmeyer presiding.


Vic accepted a call to become the pastor at Messiah American Lutheran Church in Dodge City, Kansas in 1955.  In 1956 Vic and Lois welcomed Tim Hoops followed by Cindy Hoops Boatright in 1958.  In 1961 Vic was called to Lakewood, Colorado to start a new mission church, Lutheran Church of the Master.  Vic was called up by the Colorado National Guard to active duty in 1968 and served as a Chaplain in Korea for 14 months. Upon his return stateside Vic was asked to start another mission church in Arvada, Colorado, Calvary Lutheran.  Vic remained at Calvary until his retirement in 1993.  While in the Air National Guard Vic rose to the rank of full Colonel and was on the National Guard Chaplains Advisory Board in Washington D.C.  Vic retired from the National Guard in 1988.


Vic and Lois were active members of the Ports of Call Travel club and enjoyed many trips abroad.  They also took many camping trips in and around Colorado in their travel trailer.  Vic was an avid gardener and woodworker and was a member of the Denver Woodworker Guild.


Vic and Lois have 5 grandkids and 3 great grandkids and still resided at their home in Arvada, Colorado


Vic is preceded in death by his parents Werner and Alma Hoops and brothers Harold and Harvey Hoops.  Vic is survived by his wife Lois, sisters Marilyn Kettlehut (Deshler NE) and Betty Press (Hattiesburg, MS), Children Tim Hoops (Denver) and Cindy Boatright (Arvada), Grand Children Heather Hoops (Portland OR), Heidi Hoops Eng (Golden), Hilary Hoops (Seattle WA), Nick Boatright (Arvada) and Chris Boatright (Arvada).  Vic had 3 great grandchildren, Brooks, Brynn and Hazel.


Services will be held on July 6th, 2023.  There will be a public viewing at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 4500 Wadsworth. Wheat Ridge, Colorado at 8:00 am.  A service will begin at 9:00 am, also at Holy Cross Lutheran.  Interment will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery at 11am. Those who plan on attending the committal service should arrive at the cemetery approximately 15 minutes before the service and line up at staging area A, using the Sheridan Blvd funeral entrance.
