Sonia S. Mayrath, 77, passed away peacefully at her home in Longmont, Colorado, on Wednesday, January 8th, 2025.

She was born November 1st, 1947, in Dodge City, Kansas, the daughter of Melvin E. and Zula M. Reed. She graduated in the class of 1965 at Dodge City High School, and earned her Bachelor of Education degree from St. Mary of the Plains College in 1969. She was a teacher with Lincoln Elementary School in Dodge City, and later, Pierceville-Plymell Elementary School in Garden City, Kansas. After leaving her teaching career for several years to raise her two daughters, Sonia returned to education with the Adult Learning Center in Garden City, before moving to Colorado in the late 1980s. She then pursued her master's degree in education at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. Later in life, Sonia worked as a tutor with Sylvan Learning Center in Longmont, Colorado. She settled into retirement in 2015 after several years evaluating standardized tests with Measured Progress.

Sonia was an avid learner, and also enjoyed sewing, cross-stitching, reading, and polishing off crossword puzzle books in her spare time. She always shared her home with no less than 2 cats at any given time, but was fond of all animals.

Sonia is survived by her husband, James Mayrath, Longmont, Colorado; 2 daughters, Mandi Lix, Fort Collins, Colorado, and Marin Lix and husband, Artemus Legg, Loveland, Colorado; granddaughter, Payton Legg, Loveland, Colorado; brother, James “Rick” Reed, Dodge City, Kansas.

She is preceded in death by her father and mother, and ex-husband and father of her daughters, Carmon Lix.

A celebration of Sonia’s life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Longmont Humane Society.
