Robert Howard Whiting died February 8, 2026, in Denver where he was living at Sunrise Independent Living in Broomfield, CO. Bob was born April 6,1937, to Robert and Florence Whiting in Denver, Colorado. After moves to Boulder, CO and High Point, NC, where Bob started elementary school, the family moved back to Colorado where his father became the Episcopal priest in Alamosa and the San Luis Valley and his mother taught school at Boyd and Head-start. Bob continued his education with the Alamosa School District until he graduated in 1955. During those school years, Bob
was always busy; first as a paper boy, then working at the Rialto Theater and then Daniels Supermarket. During his high school years and college, Bob was active in music programs,
acting, and was the drum major in high school and college. He attended Adams State College (University) where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English, spent a few years in the Boston area in the Navy, then returned to Adams State. Upon receiving his master's degree, he accepted a position at Kamehameha Schools in Honolulu, Hawaii. He taught high school English for six years (1963-1969) before returning to Colorado to earn a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado in Denver. While in Denver he met his soon-to-be wife, Marilyn (Moore). After getting married, Bob and Marilyn returned to Hawaii where he continued at Kamehameha Schools as director of special events, and director of curriculum for the next 29 years (1972-2001). When anyone else might have
retired, Bob accepted the position as Headmaster at Holy Nativity, a private Episcopal Day School, where he continued his education career for eleven more years. For most of his professional life,
Bob was a devotee of servant leadership, a philosophy that addresses the quality of people and their work within the spirit of community. In education, it involved meeting the educational needs of students and the professional as well as the organizational needs of teachers and staff to bring out the best in all of them. In one of Bob's first administrative assignments, he was appointed as the director of a soon- t o - b e completed K a m e h a m e h a Library Learning Center. It brought together two separate and long-standing libraries and included elements new to the school,
including centers for student graphics production, a student video production studio and a computer center, all to serve 1800 students and faculty in the high school.
Bob and Marilyn moved to Olympia, WA after his career in Hawaii. Marilyn preceded him in death in 2022. He then moved to Colorado near his sister, Jane Herrick and brother, Jim Whiting. His sister, Lila McIntyre with her husband Joe and daughter Debbie live in California but visited and communicated with him frequently. Bob is survived by his sisters Lila and Jane and his brother Jim, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Friends and family alike appreciated his humor, wit, kindness and his engaging personality.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him!
