Renate G. Hanne

August 16, 1928 ~ May 28, 2022 (age 93)

Renate Lieselotte Girwert Hanne of Westminster, Colorado passed away on the 28th day of May, 2022 at 93 years of age.  She was born in Konstadt Ober-Schlesien Germany to Karl and Augusta (Walde) Girwert, along with 2 younger brothers Dietmar and Rudi.

Renate grew up in World War II Germany and as a child, already assisted in her parents’ photography studio. After being displaced by the Russians when they over-ran the area (losing everything she and her family had), she spent over a year homeless until her family eventually was able to settle and build their own home in the Havelse/Garbsen area. She then got a job with Telefunken (a manufacturer of TVs and radios).  It was here that she met Albert Hanne, and she followed him to the United States where they married and settled in the Detroit Area.

They relocated to Denver in 1969 and divorced in 1977.  Renate built a successful career working for the City of Lakewood in their Purchasing Department and then by working her way up through the RMH Group (Consulting Engineers) to the position of Assistant Controller. She retired from RMH in 1999 at the age of 70.

Renate took immense pride in a variety of activities she participated in. She qualified for the National Senior Olympics in Race-walking (she was on the front page of the Denver Post for an event) and was a multi-year participant of the Bolder Boulder. In addition, she donated over 25 GALLONS of blood to Bonfils Blood Centers over the course of her life. Spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the highlights of her retirement. She was known as “Oma” (Grandma) to almost everyone that knew her (not just her grandchildren), and she thoroughly enjoyed that role.

She purchased a townhome in Lakewood in 1978, where she lived until August of 2020, when she moved into The Retreat at Church Ranch (an independent assisted living center in Westminster located closer to her son).

Renate leaves behind 3 children, Norman (of Littleton, CO), Mark (and wife Laura of Broomfield, CO), and Sandy (of Richardson, TX).  She is also survived by grandchildren Lisa Carter (and her husband Brandon), Jessica, Ashleigh, and Marlena Hanne, and great-grandchildren, Penelope and Hadley Carter. In addition, she leaves behind a large extended family in Germany, including her youngest brother Rudi Girwert, nephews Michael (Birgit) Girwert, Karsten (Corda) Girwert, Thomas Girwert, sister-in-law Irmtraud Girwert. and other extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents Karl and Augusta Girwert, and her brother Dietmar Girwert.
