Family and Friends,
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nadine (Nelson) Gilmore, a beloved great grandmother, grandmother, stepmother, sister, aunt, and dear friend to many, 82, on November 5, 2023, in Broomfield, Colorado.
Nadine was born on November 11, 1940 in Big Springs, Nebraska to Romane and Doris Nelson. She grew up in Julesburg, Colorado with her brother Marvin and her sister Lorraine and graduated from Sedgwick County High School in 1958. There were 36 students in her graduating class and she remained lifelong friends with the majority of them, thanks to reunions, brunches, bridge, and card games.
She went on to receive her B.S. in Education at Western State College in Gunnison, CO and later received her Masters degree in Administration from North Texas State University in Denton. Nadine was an exceptional teacher at every level she taught. She began her teaching career in Los Angeles, CA and taught in Prescott, AZ, Carrollton, TX and Killeen, TX where she retired after a long and rewarding career.
Nadine absolutely loved teaching children and taught every grade in elementary school, however, the primary students were her favorites. She was a master teacher who taught students to be responsible, caring and confident young learners. She encouraged creativity and
teamwork and loved the spark on children’s faces when they learned something new or accomplished a goal. Nadine retired from teaching in Killeen, TX after working in administration and teacher training at the end of her career.
She spent her retirement years in Broomfield, Colorado to be closer to family and friends after her late husband, Granville Gilmore of Killeen, TX and her sister, Lorraine Morton of Temple, TX passed away. Nadine was very involved in her Broomfield community. She volunteered at Birch Elementary School in her granddaughter’s classroom and at numerous events at the Presbyterian Church of Broomfield. She particularly loved helping with Vacation Bible School each summer.
Whether it was baking and decorating cookies, sewing costumes, reading books, playing games or cards with friends, mentoring to students, sharing her faith with others or enjoying a cup of coffee, Nadine was always having fun. She loved crafting, reading, baking, tutoring, pottery and volunteering. Nadine always had a story to tell and loved to laugh! While Nadine didn’t have any children of her own, her step-children, grand-children, and great-grandchildren were her world. She loved her friends and developed close friendships with many people and families throughout the years. We are all better for having known her and the joy she brought into our lives.
She is survived by her step daughters Kayce Schumacher (husband, Randy), Thelma Bell (husband, Jerry), stepsons Mike Gilmore and John Curry, her brother Marvin Nelson (wife, Muriel), her niece Michelle Miller, and nephews Michael Nelson and Jim Morton. Nadine had six grandchildren: Katie (Schumacher) Rothenbury, Alex (Schumacher) Chavez, Brandon Gilmore, Brent Gilmore, Adam Bell, Emily Lawrence, and great grandchildren, Lainey, Addison, Aimery, Rhett, Reagan, Mitchell, Mallory, Adriana, and Preston. Nadine was preceded in death by her husband of 19 years, Granville Gilmore, stepdaughter Mary Lou Gilmore, stepgrandson Bryan Gilmore, both of her parents, Romane and Doris Nelson, and her sister, Lorraine Morton.
The memorial service to celebrate Nadine's life will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2023 at Presbyterian Church of Broomfield, 350 Main St. Broomfield, Colorado at 10:00am.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Presbyterian Church of Broomfield, Colorado in memory of Nadine Gilmore.
