Maxine Carol Farley Obituary

Maxine Carol Farley (87), a woman of faith who cherished her family, valued education, and loved singing, claimed the promise of her baptism peacefully in her sleep on October 29, 2025, at The Gallery Assisted Living in Broomfield, Colorado.

Maxine was born on October 28, 1938, in Winside, Nebraska to Emil Thies and Rosina (Swanson) Thies. Maxine had three brothers: Earl Thies, Donald Thies, and Duane Thies. Maxine graduated from Winside High School and received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Marycrest College located in Davenport, Iowa. On December 22, 1963, Maxine married Phillip Farley at Trinity Lutheran Church in Winside, Nebraska. They had two children— Jenine and Mikel.

Maxine worked as an elementary school teacher for ten years—for five years in Omaha, Nebraska and for five years in Clinton, Iowa. In 1975, she became the Clinton Iowa Community Recreation Center Preschool Director. Later, she worked for Clinton Schools as a substitute teacher, at a childcare center in Broomfield, Colorado, and at a women’s clothing store where she became an assistant manager and then the manager. She retired in 2001.  Maxine was an active woman with many interests. She held leadership and committee positions within the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She served on both the Education Board and the library committee at her church in Clinton, Iowa, and, after moving to Colorado, actively participated in women's groups and Bible studies at Lutheran Church of Hope.

Maxine had a passion for singing, particularly gospel music and traditional hymns. She valued time spent with family, including those members residing in Nebraska and Iowa, and often reflected fondly on her upbringing on the family farm in Nebraska as well as on her years with good friends in Clinton, Iowa. Maxine and Phillip traveled twice to Branson with long-time friends Deanna and Ernie Hammond, who had played a pivotal role in introducing her to her husband—Ernie having been her husband's Air Force colleague and Deanna having been her roommate in Omaha. Maxine also enjoyed many visits with her Denver cousins: Sherree Dangberg, Lyla & Dave Moulden.

Maxine is predeceased by her parents, Emil and Rosina Thies; her husband, Phillip Farley; her brother, Donald Thies and sister-in-law Susan Thies; her brother, Earl Thies and sister-in-law Ada Thies; and by Margaret Bloomer, her brother Earl Thies’s companion of more than 30 years (after Ada’s death). Maxine is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jenine Desai and Jay Desai, her son, Mikel Farley; and her grandson Alexander Desai. She is also survived by her brother, Duane Thies; her sister-in-law, Teresa Farley Sharp; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends throughout the United States.

Maxine’s Liturgy of Resurrection will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Crosses at Lutheran Church of Hope with inurnment to follow in the LCHope Columbarium.  A light reception will follow the liturgy.
