Marvin Joe Eakes passed peacefully at home Thursday, Sept. 14, 2023, at the age of 95. Marvin was born to Joe and Lillie (Howell) Eakes April 22, 1928, in Norfolk, Neb. He graduated from Norfolk Senior High School in 1946 and briefly attended Norfolk Junior College, before transferring to Colorado State College of Education (now the University of Northern Colorado) in Greeley, Colo., graduating with both a B.A. in Education (1949) and M.A. in Education (1956). Marv taught and coached two years at Adams City High School and three years at Alameda Junior/Senior High School in Jefferson County, Colo. He taught six years at SUNY Plattsburgh and was a consultant with the Colorado Department of Education. He also served as a secondary public-school administrator for 18 years in Colorado, including time in Craig, Littleton, Longmont and Aurora, before retiring in 1989.
Marv served in the U. S. Army from 1950 to 1953, including as Platoon Leader and Company Commander with the ambulance company of the 3rd Infantry Division during the Korean War. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service.
In retirement, Marv tutored students at Front Range Community College and Aspen Creek Middle School. He was an active community and church volunteer. He was a master storyteller with an unmatched memory for detail. Marv’s main hobby was singing, including as a soloist and in church and civic choruses. Being born on Arbor Day (April 22) sparked a lifelong passion for planting and tending to trees, including his spearheading tree planting projects throughout the community. Marv remained a gracious, engaged, gregarious, active, loving Christian and friend throughout his life.
Marvin is survived by his son Todd (Susan) Eakes, daughter Karen (Kenneth) Morales, seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Barbara (Brown) Eakes, his parents and his brother, Eugene Eakes.
Please join us in honoring and celebrating Marvin’s life on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023. Services are at 10 a.m. in the Broomfield United Methodist Church, 545 W. 10th Ave., Broomfield, CO 80020.
In lieu of flowers, Marvin’s family requests a donation be made in his honor to Broomfield FISH or the Broomfield Veteran’s Museum.
