Margaret Cleary Obituary

Living until her 90th year, Margaret Cleary passed away on March 5, 2024. Margaret was born on May 11, 1934, in Houlton, Maine, to James Donald "Don” and Marion Irene McCluskey. She had three brothers and one sister and graduated from Houlton High School 1952, Catherine Laboure School of Nursing in 1955, and Boston College School of Nursing 1959 BS and 1961 MS. She married Gerald N. "Gerry" Cleary on December 29, 1962, in Dorchester, Massachusetts. They had two children, Jennifer and Kevin, and cared for Laurie Beausoleil during her high school years. Margaret held many nursing positions: Madigan Memorial Hospital, C.L.S.N., Sudbury Public Schools and The Carroll Center for the Blind (35 years). She moved to Boulder, Colorado to live with her daughter Jennifer in 2009, consulting with the Colorado Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, teaching online courses in diabetes and vison impairment and continued on as a Rehabilitation Consultant Nurse.

Margaret was a devoted wife, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt and cherished mentor to all that were lucky enough to know her. She graduated from Houlton High School and Catherine Laboure School of Nursing in 1952 as valedictorian. She graduated from Boston College School of Nursing in 1959 with a BS and in 1961 with an MS in Nursing. She was inducted in to the Catherine Laboure School of Nursing Wall of Fame in 2018, acknowledging her contributions to her profession.

She held many positions throughout her career as a nurse and health educator. Much of her work was focused on helping to impact the vocational lives of visually impaired and blind consumers through her work at the Carroll Center for the Blind. She was credited with bringing light to those who were engulfed in darkness. She remained connected to her work for the Carroll Center, developing and teaching a distance education series. She proudly wrote her final professional article, of many, last year, at the age of 88 and even in her final week of life, she would say, “I’m still a nurse, once a nurse, always a nurse”

Devoted wife to the late Gerry Cleary. Loving mother to Jennifer and the late Kevin Cleary. Cherished grandmother to Kevanna Cleary, Micah Cleary, Dorje Dolma, Joshua Harrison and Jakob Harrison. She was adored by many nieces and nephews: Mary Liz Wall, Doug Small, Jill Small, Chris Small, Mary Jo McCluskey, Kathy Schofield, Doreen McCluskey, Paul McCluskey, Steven Cleary, Mark Cleary, Christine Guarino, Jan Guarino, Kathy Guarino and the late Steven Guarino. She was deeply dedicated to her huge extended family of cousins, with whom she stayed in touch with the best she could throughout her life. She was appreciated by many in the Boulder Community, especially from Sacred Heart Church, the Boulder YMCA senior pool group, Al-anon and her neighbors.

The family would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Trail Winds Hospice and Family Tree for their loving care of Margaret in her final months.
