Lillian Marie (Newell) Harvey

November 17, 1921 ~ May 16, 2022 (age 100)

Lillian Harvey, 100, died early on Monday, May 16th, 2022, at the home of her daughter in Denver, Colorado. Lillian was born in Claremont, New Hampshire to Leonard E. Newell and Alma Lacasse Newell on November 17, 1921. Her father was a grocer, and the family made their home above the family grocery store.

Her family were life long parishioners of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Claremont, and Lillian was baptized, received First Communion, and was Confirmed at Saint Mary's as well as attending St. Mary's Catholic School from grade 1 through grade 12.

She attended nursing school at St. Joseph's Hospital in Nashua, New Hampshire, graduating as a registered nurse in 1943. Following her graduation, she was employed at Hale Hospital in Haverhill, Massachusetts.  She soon began a 10 year career with the Veterans Administration hospitals, starting in White River Junction, Vermont.  Her first taste of Florida came in 1945, when she began work at the VA hospital in Coral Gables, Florida. She finished her career with the VA hospital in 1954 at the Lake City Veterans Administration Hospital, where she met her second husband, Louis Y. Harvey. They were married in August 1954 and remained married until his death in 1985.

During her nursing career, Lillian worked at the Mount Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach, Florida, Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers, Florida, and the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Her final years as a nurse were spent in a private practice medical clinic in Fort Myers, Florida where she retired in 1985. Lillian was the very definition of the early modern woman as she worked full time as a registered nurse and raised a family in the 1950s and 60s.

Lillian had a deep love of family, travel, a good donut, dark chocolate, and the importance of eating root vegetables and fruits. Her greatest gift came with the birth of her only grandchild Taylor who she showered with love and attention.

Lillian was a resident of Tallahassee for the past 36 years, where she was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church and participated in the Young at Heart group.

She was predeceased by her father and mother, brother Arthur Newell, sister Ida Bresell, her first husband Thomas Kalesavich and second husband Louis. She is survived by her son Leonard and his wife Lisa of Tallahassee, Florida, daughter Deborah Ann Harvey of Thornton, Colorado, grandson Taylor Harvey, of Bryan, Texas and several  nieces and nephew.

Funeral services are set for 11:00 AM MT on Thursday, May 26th, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Thornton, Colorado.  Burial will take place at a later date in Claremont, New Hampshire. In lieu of flowers, consider donating to the Hospice of your choice.
