Karen Ray Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Karen Ray, born on March 21, 1961, who peacefully left this world at her home in Westminster, Colorado, on November 11, 2024.

Karen lived a vibrant and adventurous life, calling many states home throughout her journey, including Washington, California, Minnesota, West Virginia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania

, Arizona, Massachusetts, New York, and Colorado. She pursued her education at New York University, where she studied political science—a field that would become a cornerstone of her life’s work. Karen was not only a dedicated political and social activist but also a versatile professional, with experience ranging from the coal mining industry to IT engineering. Her passion for justice propelled her across the country and around the globe, forging deep and lasting connections wherever she went.

Though petite in stature, Karen was a natural leader—her spirit was both light and lively, yet fiercely determined when it came to critical social and political issues. She had an innate ability to uplift those around her, offering help and support to friends and strangers alike, often putting others' needs before her own. In the last year and a half she found strength and camaraderie within the lung cancer community, where she not only received support but also provided it to others navigating similar challenges.

Karen’s love for her family was boundless. She is survived by her devoted sister, Nicole Ray of Illinois, and her loving husband, Richard C. Stuart of Colorado. She was preceded in death by her father, Christopher Tyler Ray, her mother, Deborah Kogan, and her grandmother, Hildegard Cohen.

An animal lover at heart, Karen found immense joy and companionship with her many cats throughout the years. She was a spirited individual who cherished laughter, enjoyed shopping for great deals, and took delight in home projects, showcasing her eclectic taste in decor.

An avid gardener, Karen found solace in her gardens, which served as her personal oasis. Her love for travel and exploring local cultures enriched her life, as did her adventures in nature, where she reveled in the beauty of wildlife and flora.

In honoring Karen’s memory, her family will hold a private memorial service. While she may no longer be with us, the impact of her life and the love she shared will continue to be celebrated daily. Condolences and tributes may be sent to Nicole Ray at: 613 E. Walnut St., Bloomington, IL 61701.

Rest in peace, dear Karen. Your spirit will remain alive in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know you.
