Jane Ann States Obituary

Jane Ann States (Reuwee)
October 28, 1940 – October 8, 2025
Jane (Janie) Ann States (née Reuwee) passed away peacefully on October 8, 2025, in Westminster, Colorado, at the age of 84. She was born on October 28, 1940, in Mansfield, Ohio.

As a young woman, Janie was diagnosed with an asthmatic condition, and her physician advised her to study in a drier climate. With determination and independence, she boarded a train west and enrolled in the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque to pursue a nursing degree. While there, she pledged the
Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. On her train ride home for Christmas break at the end of her first semester, Janie met Don States, a meeting that would shape the rest of her life. Janie and Donald Carl States were married on August 22, 1959, in Columbus, Ohio. They made their first home in Albuquerque, where their daughter Joan and son Carl were born. In 1968, Don’s job took the family to Colorado, where they settled in Arvada and welcomed their third child, Van.
Once all three children were in school, Janie returned to the workforce, holding several administrative assistant positions. In 1980, the family relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, the second of many moves that took them to Herndon, Virginia, Vancouver, Washington, and Lakewood, Colorado. Janie eventually took and passed the GSA exam and was hired by the USDA Forest Service. She later accepted a position with the USDA Forest Service Law Enforcement division, where she worked until her
retirement in 2000. She deeply loved her work and her coworkers.

In retirement, Janie and Don settled in Thompson Falls, Montana, where they built a log home along the Clark Fork River and spent many joyful years. In her healthy years, Janie served her church and volunteered at the Library. As her health needs increased, they moved to Boise, Idaho to be closer to Van and his family, and later returned to Colorado to be near Joan and her family in Westminster. Janie was a woman of many talents and creative passions. She loved crafting, especially knitting, crochet, cross-stitch, tatting and quilting. She took great joy in gifting her handmade creations. Music was also a lifelong love; she played piano, sang, and especially enjoyed handbell choirs, both performing and directing them during her years in Montana. She was an avid reader, puzzle solver, and solitaire player.

In her final years, as Janie’s health declined, she spent the last three years of her life in skilled nursing care at Covenant Living of Colorado. Through it all, she demonstrated unwavering strength, courage, and grace. Her faith in Jesus remained steadfast, and she found contentment in every season of life, trusting that He would bring her home in His perfect timing.

Janie was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, and her beloved son Carl. She is survived by her devoted husband of 66 years, Don, her daughter Joan (Kent) Larson, son Van (Stacie) States, sister Mary (Skip) Barndt, five grandchildren; Lucas (Kaitlyn) Larson, Jenna (Abram) Ziemer, Bryn (Fletcher) Johnson, Ensley States, Cole States, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins who will continue to honor her memory.
