Obituary

Hugh “John” Dean Mayne, born on April 5, 1943 to Donald and Velma (Scott) Mayne in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2023 in Thornton, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Robert, and his sister Sharon. He is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Cathy, as well as six children: four daughters, Dawn Wulf (Mario), Rae Patterson (Charlie), Jessica Cook (Chris), and Madison Hertle (Joe); and two sons, Zachary (Nicole) and Eric (Erin). He is also survived by his sister, Jo Sheeley. John leaves a legacy of 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Though he was born and raised as Hugh, at the age of 39, he became a Christian and decided to take the name John to signify his new identity in Christ. He was known as John to most people in his life thereafter.

John was known to his family and friends as a problem-solver, a hard worker, and an encourager. He loved to be helpful and was the on-call handyman, mechanic, and fixer. He could fix just about anything he could get his hands on, and couldn’t rest until everything was up and working. His desire to be helpful extended further, too - he also loved praying and kept a constantly updated list of people to pray for in his wallet.
He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting and birdwatching. Anytime he had the chance, he could be found enjoying the great outdoors- even if only to do yard work. He worked tirelessly to keep the grass and trees looking immaculate year-round and was proud to have one of the finest yards in the neighborhood.

John was a natural leader, and he excelled in management at several companies throughout his working years, including area manager of a convenience store chain, department manager at a grocery store, and shipping manager at a warehouse.

John was a family man, a devoted husband, an involved father, and a loving grandfather and great-grandfather. He was dearly loved by the many people who were blessed to have him close to them, and his memory will be cherished for generations to come.

An Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 30 in Westminster Colorado at Northwest Vineyard Church from
2-4 pm. Please join us in remembrance of his life.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to their “tree fund” to restore the family home’s yard to its former beauty. They would like to plant two trees in the front yard like the ones that John used to tend to.
Alternatively, donations can be made to Mile High Vineyard, John and Cathy’s church or to Alzheimer’s Disease or Lewy Body Dementia, both of which John fought a long and difficult battle against in the last years of his life.
