Early Life and Education:
Harold was the eldest child of Henry and Magdalene Schreter, born on September 21, 1930. His spiritual journey began early, as he was baptized, raised, confirmed, and married in the Lutheran church—a reflection of his lifelong faith. Harold’s education started in country school, where he attended through the eighth grade, followed by graduation from Java Public High School. He then briefly attended Wartburg College.
Marriage and Family
In 1951, Harold married Ann Louise (Witlock), the love of his life. Their relationship began when Harold met Ann at Luther League, and he immediately knew he would marry her, captivated by her beauty. Shortly after their wedding, Harold left South Dakota to serve in the U.S. Army in Fairbanks, Alaska, during the Korean War, with Ann joining him soon after. After Harold’s military service, he and Ann settled on the Schreter family homestead north of Swan Lake, where they farmed and raised cattle until their retirement in 2001. They made their home in Selby, South Dakota, from 2001 to 2011. In 2011, they moved to Colorado, where they spent the rest of their lives together.
Interests and Community Involvement
Faith, family, music, and fishing were central to Harold’s life. He participated in high school, church, and Selby Men’s choirs, creating cherished memories. Harold enjoyed singing and playing piano with his children and often performed solos, showcasing his remarkable tenor voice. In his youth, he played trumpet in a family band. Harold was an enthusiastic fisherman, happiest when on a boat or pontoon with a rod in hand. He also enjoyed pheasant and deer hunting. Harold was deeply engaged in his community, serving on the church council, school board, and as a member of the Board of Directors for Cam Wal Electric Cooperative, Inc. for twenty years.
