Obituary

Geraldine Theresa Schumacher, 90, a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt, passed away on May 11, 2022 at her home in Lafayette, Colorado surrounded by the love of her family.

Geraldine was born in Remsen, Iowa on September 26, 1931, daughter of Emma (Salwolkie) and Aloysius Nothem.  She grew up mostly in Remsen and Sioux City, Iowa although she moved with her mother and stepfather, Ernest Schumacher, and several siblings to Fullerton, California as a teenager and graduated from Fullerton High School.

After graduating from high school, Geraldine moved back to Remsen and married Daniel Schumacher in 1950. They had four children, Steven, Dana, David and John while living in Remsen. The family relocated to Des Moines, Iowa for Daniel’s work.  After Daniel’s accidental death and Brien’s birth, the family moved back to Remsen and then Le Mars, Iowa to be closer to family.

Geraldine was a strong, resilient and loving mother raising five children on her own in Iowa. She enjoyed spending time with her siblings and their families including family reunions in Spencer, Iowa. Geraldine was also an adventurer and enjoyed road and camping trips, including travels in Iowa, Minnesota, Colorado, and Arizona.

After raising her family in Remsen and Le Mars, Geraldine was ready for a change of scenery and moved to Boulder, Colorado and then to Cedar Falls, Iowa in the 1970s. She also lived in the Los Angeles, California area before relocating to Colorado in the 1980s – living in Aurora, Estes Park, Loveland, and Longmont, before settling in Lafayette for the past 20+ years.

Geraldine loved gatherings with her extended family, especially spending time with family in the mountains.  She enjoyed planning adventures and the next great road trip. She appreciated nature and animals and being around family pets.  Geraldine enjoyed music and singing along with her favorites.  She was also passionate about social justice issues.

Geraldine is survived by her sister Lavon Engel, daughters Dana Schumacher and Mary Maltbie, sons Steven Schumacher, David Schumacher, John Schumacher, and Brien Schumacher, daughters in-law Bridget Schumacher and Cindy Schumacher, grandchildren Melantha, Mandela, Marisha, Megan, Daniel, Haley, Sawyer, Colin, Emma and Sean, and great grandchildren Zoey, Austin, Alexis, Adrienne, and Avery, as well as many extended family members.
