George Fiero Obituary

George William (Bill) Fiero, Jr.

Jan. 16, 1936 - Jan 1, 2024

Resident of Lakewood, CO

"Do not stand at my grave and weep,

I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,

I am diamond glints on snow,

I am the sunlight on ripened grain,

I am the gentle autumn's rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush,

I am the swift uplifting rush

of quiet birds in circled flight;

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand by my grave and cry,

I am not there. I did not die."

Bill Fiero, of Lakewood, CO, age 87, passed away January 1, 2024.

Originally from Rochester, NY, Bill graduated from Dartmouth and then the University of Wyoming, becoming a petroleum geologist for Texaco in New Mexico and Texas. Bill and his wife Ellen now had two young sons (Brad and Scott). After discussing their future, they decided to get out of the corporate life and try academia. So Bill went back to school at the University of Wisconsin. Armed with his PhD and final child (Kim), Bill and Ellen moved to Las Vegas, NV, where Bill eventually became full professor in geology at the University of Las Vegas. There, he became a sought-after teacher, researcher, and writer (e.g., The Geology of the Great Basin). Bill also took people on many geology-related trips locally and internationally through the Continuing Education program at UNLV.

While working, Bill loved to be outdoors, camping, hiking, and backpacking with his family on weekends and summers. After retiring in 1986, Bill and Ellen sold their house and, among many other adventures, through-hiked the Appalachian Trail. Without a house, they traveled in a sequence of “homes”... small RV, backpack (1988), Flicka sailboat (1991-93), and then C-Dory powerboat (2000-2012). Bill wrote about his and Ellen’s adventures aboard their C-Dory named Halcyon in a blog titled “Cruising America: Halcyon Days” which had a huge following.

At the age of 70, Bill and Ellen, began renting a condo in Lakewood, CO, overlooking Kendrick Lake, and near Kim’s family and later Scott’s family. They continued to boat much of the year, but now they had a permanent place, near family. In Nov 2018, Bill had a second stroke and had to move into assisted living at the Village of Belmar, where he met many new friends and enjoyed time with family. Bill passed away peacefully, surrounded by family Jan 1, 2024.

Bill is survived by his wife, Ellen; and brother, Don ( wife Kathy); and children, Brad (wife Jenny), Scott, and Kim; and his grandchildren, Ami (husband John) and Bryce, Ty, and Sarah and Kate; and great grandchildren, Orion and Cassi; and many close friends.

No memorial service will be held. If you wish to leave memories or a photo, Bill has a tribute wall at https://www.inmemoriamservices.com/obituary/George-Fiero#tributewall
