Dwight “DJ” Ellison Obituary

Born October 26, 1989 in Fort Worth, Texas, DJ was the final, chaotic addition to the family of Dwight Sr. (father), Billie Faye (mother), and Amanda Panda (sister).

His early childhood was filled with misadventures that happened all over the country due to his father's service in the Air Force. As an infant in Texas, he crawled down two flights of stairs to explore the world outside of his apartment while his toddler sister looked on with curious indifference. His dad was on the toilet. In Oklahoma, that same sister convinced him to run away from home with her at age four. They were immediately apprehended by the police. The policewoman was very nice and bought them both ICEE slushies, a kind decision that cost her an hour or so of cleaning up the backseat of her police cruiser. In Massachusetts, Dwight reconnected with long-lost cousins and through watching them and his father play the first iconic Diablo game, he discovered a new hobby in video games. In Colorado, after a long and boring journey across dry plains, DJ would finally be able to plant roots, go to college, build stable relationships, and start a professional career.

Dwight was always passionate about music, an interest that probably developed from listening to his parents blast their own favorites from the boombox. His tastes were varied, from hip-hop to prog rock, but dubstep really ignited something in him. When he started working with Anschutz Entertainment Group, going to concerts and interacting with the Denver music scene, he saw an opportunity to pursue his passion in a way that gave back to the community that had welcomed him so easily. He sought out independent, lesser known artists and helped them get booked at shows in front of hundreds of people. It brought DJ great joy to watch the artists he managed gain the appreciation of fans and peers alike. He also loved to hook his friends up with free tickets or even VIP access. His success in the music scene connected him to talented people and music fans of all stripes, growing him a second family of fun-loving people to enjoy music and Denver's night life with.

During the daylight hours, Dwight enjoyed being out in nature and his frequent haunts included hiking trails, kayaking, and hot springs. He was a very spirited and open-minded person. He believed that the energy you put into the world is what you would receive; he believed in the indomitable power of the human spirit to overcome all challenges; he believed that a rising tide would raise all boats. His wit, creativity, and positive energy charmed and brightened the world for 35 years—not nearly enough time—but they say the brightest stars burn out the quickest.

Dwight leaves behind a legacy of music, along with aunties, uncles, dozens of cousins, friends, colleagues, and peers—all of whom carry a piece of him with them, ensuring that his brightness burns forever.
