Doris Jean Sauerland

Doris Jean Sauerland claimed the promise of her baptism on Saturday, November 12, 2022, after a short journey with abdominal cancer.
Doris was born on January 6, 1937, in Tower City, North Dakota, the daughter of Roy and Irma Swanke. She married Carl Sauerland on June 21, 1975. She was mother to David Hornbacher and Debbie Grieco (Mike). Doris was preceded in death by her parents, sister Marcella Richman, and daughter-in-law Von Fumetti. She is survived by her husband Carl; children David and Debbie; grandchildren Paige Pier (Colt), Sean Hornbacher, great-grandson Xander Pier; and Carl’s children, Debrah, Diana, and Dana. Doris is also survived by her brothers Wayne Swanke (Stephanie), Jim Swanke (Peggy), and Will Swanke.
Doris earned a Bachelor’s Degree in business administration at Regis University. She was a preschool and second grade teacher, worked at Amoco Production Company in Purchasing and Contracts and part-time at Wee Travel. A long-time member at Lutheran Church of Hope, she sang in chancel choir, helped with luncheons and coordinated the Children’s Cradle Roll program. She also volunteered at Broomfield Library, Meals on Wheels and Relay for Life cancer walk.
Doris spent many hours sewing, knitting, scrapbooking, baking lefse, attending grandchildren and great grandchild’s events. During the Covid pandemic she made masks, blankets, fidget blankets for high-risk elderly adults.
Always seeing the good in life and the world, Doris was positive and uplifting, grateful, full of life, and compassionate. She was full of strength and perseverance, joyful, beautiful inside and out, and left a lasting impression on all those she met. Teacher throughout her life intellectually and spiritually, she was full of true grace and peace. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A Liturgy of Resurrection for Doris will be held on Friday, November 18, at 3:00pm at Lutheran Church of Hope, with a reception to follow. The liturgy will be webcasted live and archived for later viewing at www.lchope.org/watch. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Doris may be given to the Memorial Fund of Lutheran Church of Hope by going to www.lchope.org/give.
