Donald D. Gilman, 81, of Arvada, Colorado, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2025. A devoted husband, brother, uncle and friend, Don will be remembered for his meticulous nature, quiet generosity and deep compassion for both people and animals.
Born on May 5, 1944, in Denver, Colorado, to Harold D. Gilman and Vera M. Gilman, Don grew up with an abiding love for the Rocky Mountains that surrounded him. From a young age, he displayed an attention to detail and a steady determination that carried him throughout his life.
After graduating from high school, Don was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served honorably in the Signal Corps. He was stationed at the Da Nang airbase in Vietnam for two years before extending his service for another two, part of which was spent stationed in Germany. This period of his life shaped his sense of discipline and responsibility, qualities that defined both his personal and professional life.
Upon returning home, Don began his longstanding career with the U.S. Department of the Interior where he worked diligently for 30 years until his retirement in 2001. Known for his thoroughness and reliability, Don took great pride in his work and the relationships he built along the way.
In 1970 Don married the love of his life, Sally A. Gilman, with whom he shared more than five decades of unwavering partnership. Together Don and Sally devoted their lives to rescuing and caring for Scottish Terriers, an endeavor that became both their shared passion and calling. Through their membership in a local rescue organization along with their creation of Scottie Rescue of the Rockies, they rescued and rehomed hundreds of Scotties over the span of 20 to 25 years. Their commitment and expertise earned them the admiration of countless Scottie owners in Denver, Colorado and elsewhere.
In later years, Don and Sally developed a special affection for the Skye Terrier, a rare and nearly extinct breed. Their last canine companion, a Skye Terrier named Gairuth, held a treasured place in their hearts. Even as his health declined, Don ensured that Gairuth would be safe and loved, a testament to his lifelong devotion to caring for others, both human and animal alike.
Those who know Don will remember him as detail-oriented, thoughtful and endlessly generous. Whether it was advising fellow rescuers, helping friends with a project, or offering quiet support to those needing it. Don’s presence bought a sense of calm confidence and goodwill.
Don is survived by his beloved wife, Sally A. Gilman, his sisters Virginia Lundy and Victoria Pratt: his nephews, Matthew Lundy and Brandon Pratt and numerous friends and community members who were touched by his life and work. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Vera Gilman.
A celebration of Don’s life will be held in the spring, with details to be announced at a later date.
Don, we miss you, love you and wish you peace.
