Charlotte A. Haravey Obituary

Charlotte Ann (Merideth) Haravey, age 90, died Wednesday June 26, 2024 in Boulder, CO.  Born in DeQueen, Arkansas to Jack Merideth (a sign maker) and Pauline Lutrell (a housewife), she was the oldest of three girls.  Beloved and voted “most beautiful” in her senior year of high school, she became Arkansas state champion in the snare drum, traveling to other states to compete, and received a scholarship to nursing school.

Charlotte met her husband Francois Haravey, MD while in nursing school in Shreveport, LA, and finished her R.N. degreein Memphis, TN. After living in New Orleans for five fun-filled and impactful years, they moved on to Boston, Phoenix and San Francisco.  Finally settling in Pasadena, CA, she spent almost fifty years in her career as a nurse and raised her daughter, Charmaine there. She divorced in 1971. When her daughter went away to college, Charlotte wanted a new challenge and received training in oncology. In the last years of her career, she specialized in gynecologic oncology and retired fully at age 77.

Charlotte loved movies (with popcorn and wine), entertaining with dinners, cocktails and conversation, sewing, classical music, and reading fiction. She was a member of the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens and held tickets to the Pasadena Symphony and Coleman Chamber Music concerts. She attended the Live at the Met opera performances for many years.  In 2016, she moved to Boulder to be closer to her daughter and her husband, David O. Thayer, MD.  She spent eight years in the Frasier Meadows retirement community where she left a lasting impression of kindness on the staff and neighbors. Charlotte will be remembered for her independent and positive spirit, her work ethic, her long and meaningful friendships with people of all ages, and her gentle Southern demeanor.

Charlotte is survived by her daughter Charmaine Haravey of Niwot, CO, sister Nita Johnson and her husband James of DeQueen, AR, nephew Phil Johnson and his wife Cathy of Keller, TX, and niece Lisa and great-niece Merideth Hands of Houston, TX.  Additionally, she is survived by two step grandkids, David Marino Thayer of Hiram, OH, and Emily Thayer of Longmont, CO, their spouses Lila and Andrew, and four step-great-grandchildren, Bennet and Rosalie Thayer of Hiram, OH, and Jaxson and Brooks Lukasiewicz of Longmont, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Elaine Merideth, and her son in law, David Thayer.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Boulder, CO, on Thursday, October 24th.
