Betty Lou Gallagher Obituary

Betty Lou Gallagher, a beloved daughter of the South Side of Chicago, passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on September 30, 2024. Born on May 14, 1932, in Blue Island, IL, to Christine Marie and Jake Hollinger, Betty was a vibrant spirit known for her passion for performing and her generous heart.

From a young age, Betty—affectionately known as Betts, Betty Lou, or Betty Boop—displayed a remarkable flair for the arts. As a child, she toured with an acrobatics troupe and performed with a traveling circus. Throughout her life, she nurtured her love for music and dance, taking lessons in voice, piano, and tap dance. In her early twenties, she became a proud member of an all-women barbershop quartet called the De-Lighters, captivating audiences in and around Chicago.

In Illinois, Betty met and married Ronald Michael Gallagher. They welcomed their son, Michael John Gallagher, in 1960. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Springfield, TN, where Betty embraced her Southern life, enjoying golf and bridge with cherished friends. Betty and Ron welcomed two more children (daughters Shannon Marie and Sharon Lee) and later divorced. Betty later worked at a high-end clothing store in Nashville, where she had the pleasure of meeting many famous Country Western singers of the 1970s.

In 1979, Betty relocated to Santa Clara, CA, to be closer to her brother Bob. She worked as an Administrative Specialist for Western Electric (later AT&T and Lucent) and became an active member of the Telephone Pioneers, leading a melodrama group that created and performed vaudeville shows. Betty also devoted time to volunteering with Junior Achievement and continued to share her love for music, singing at piano bars with her late fiancé, Charles ‘Chuck’ Kehler, often delighting crowds with her renditions of Patsy Cline songs.

After retiring from Lucent, Betty moved to Broomfield, CO, to be nearer to her daughter Shannon and granddaughter Lisa, where she worked at JC Penney for a decade, forging lasting friendships.

Betty was the perfect blend of a Midwestern gal from Chicago and a Southern belle. Her huge heart, compassionate presence, and impeccable style (scarves and jewelry to match) left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She was an avid golfer, a fast-paced quadruple solitaire champion, and a diehard Kansas City Chiefs fan. Betty had a sweet tooth for chocolates, especially Turtles, and enjoyed her nightly glass (or two) of Chardonnay, never passing up a Mimosa on special occasions. Many knew of her life-long love of elephants and contributed to her extensive collection in various ways (blankets, statues, playing cards, mugs, etc).

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Marie and Jake Hollinger, and her brother Robert Hollinger. She is survived by her children: Michael John Gallagher (Sharon) of Springfield, TN; Shannon Marie Gallagher (Jim) of Broomfield, CO; and Sharon Gallagher-Rivera (Daniel ‘Jones’) of San Rafael, CA and bonus daughter Tami Bush of Westminster, CO. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren and step-grandchildren: Lisa Brooks (Alex), Vince Gallagher, Coen Rivera, Silas Rivera, Katie Bacon, Ellie Bacon, Emerson Bacon, .

A viewing for family will be held at In Memoriam in Broomfield on Friday, October 4, from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM, followed by a graveside service for friends and family at 3:00 PM at Broomfield County Commons Cemetery. Immediately following the service, friends and family are invited to attend a Celebration of Life gathering at Shannon’s house in Broomfield (directions will be provided at the service).

In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty’s memory can be made to Music Mends Minds, a cause that reflects her love for music and the joy it brought to her life or The Elephant Sanctuary which provides captive elephants a safe haven dedicated to their well-being.

Betty will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Her legacy of love, laughter, and music will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched.
