Barbara Hickman Smith passed away at her home on Tuesday, February 16, 2021, in Westminster, CO.
Born May 25, 1944 to Sutlief Jay and Sara E (Oyler) Hickman of Camp Hill, PA, Barb was the second child and first daughter in the family. She grew up surrounded by family on the west shore, and loved visiting paternal relatives via road trips in Texas, where she discovered her love of Dr Pepper.
Barb was thrilled to be part of the first class to go the whole way through all years in the new Cedar Cliff High School, graduating in 1962.
Barb never met a stranger, everyone who met her, loved her and her bright smile. She was an avid reader (mysteries, Stephen King and Dean Koonz are favorites), she enjoyed and loved her family, the beach, especially vacations at OC, MD, and her dogs. Barb was a former long time member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Harrisburg, PA until she moved to Colorado in July, 2009. She loved the mountains of Colorado, and would take scenic drives, or visit places such as Mesa Verde.
Barb started her career at CCNB (Cumberland County National Bank), then moved on to Joe the Motorist, before working in the office of M.F. Rockey Moving Company where she met her beloved Smitty. She retired from PA Association of Realtors (PAR) where she was the executive assistant, after a long career. Barb had a brief stint in the office of the PA Funeral Directors, she really knew associations! After her move to Colorado, she became the office manager for the Bavarian Bakery in Longmont for a few years, before “retiring” again to work part time at Walgreens. Barb wanted to do something different so she started a pet care business. All of her clients loved her, and the top level care their fur babies received from “Nannie Barb”.
She is reunited with loved ones who’ve gone before her: husband George G. Smith, Jr. who was the love of her life, parents, brother Barry L. Stine, daughter Nellie Mae Gerhards, son-in-law Bruce (Bodhi Ji) Brouillette, sisters-in-law Louise Martin, Margaret Brashears, Helen Rhoades, and Ida Robinson, brothers-in-law David Smith, William Brashears, Charles Rhoades, Alfred Robinson and Ray Flanagan, nephew Michael A Flanagan, and numerous aunts and uncles.
Barb is survived by her daughters, Lumananda (Renee Smith Wildman) of Colorado, Kathryn (Rick) Jacobs of Harrisburg, Patricia Eldridge of NJ., her beloved canine sidekick, Cuddles, 9 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Donna Flanagan of Camp Hill, niece Michele (Jim) Gordon and numerous cousins and friends.
A memorial service will be held at the chapel of Rolling Green Cemetery, 1811 Carlisle Rd, Camp Hill, PA at 11:00 a.m. on April 19, 2021. Anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution, please consider donating to the local Humane Society.
