Anne V. Vickery Obituary

Anne Virginia Vickery passed away in Boulder on December 16, 2023. Born in Denver in 1935 to Milton and Frances Shrednik, Anne was a twin with her brother Anthony. Her love of Colorado and the mountains began at an early age, including summers in Estes Park with her family, and where she later attended Cheley Colorado Camps, spending numerous summers hiking, backpacking, and horseback riding. Anne graduated from East High School in Denver and was awarded a scholarship to Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island where she attended for three years. After missing Colorado and the west, Anne returned to the University of Colorado for her senior year, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in Political Science in 1958, and later earned her Master's degree in Geography also from CU.

Her love of the Colorado wilderness and conservation issues was a driving force in all she did. Settling with her family in Boulder in the mid-70s, she built one of the first solar houses in the city. She worked for many years for the Colorado Mountain Club; co-founded the Indian Peaks Working Group (later renamed the Indian Peaks Wilderness Alliance); and was one of the founding members of the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative. An avid hiker, Anne climbed all of Colorado’s 14ers (and some multiple times). Music and folk dancing were also her passions. She was an early and devoted member of the Village Arts Coalition and was instrumental in developing the Avalon Ballroom on Arapahoe as a space for community dance. Anne loved classical music, attending many Takacs Quartet concerts. She also was a lifelong folk dancer, recorder player, and singer, and devoted many hours to the Boulder Creek Festival to showcase folk dancing and singing.

Anne is remembered for her warmth, sense of humor, tenacity, and beautiful smile. She was a loving grandmother and greatly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Throughout her life, Anne traveled extensively, living in the former Soviet Union and Italy, traveling to the Galapagos Islands, UK and Ireland, and visiting her daughter Eileen and her family in China, Malaysia, and Mexico.

Anne is survived by her children, Tina Tindall, Verona, Wisconsin, Helen Vickery (Brook Blair), Boulder, Carl Vickery, Louisville, and Eileen Vickery (Todd Lundgren) Yakima, Washington, and grandchildren, Lindsey (Dan O’Loughlin), Cameron, Zooey, Rainier, and Nora, and great-granddaughter, Freya. Anne was preceded in death by her parents Milton and Frances Shrednik, her twin brother Anthony Shrednik (2023) and her first husband Walter Neef Vickery (1995).

There will be a Celebration of Life at the Boulder Unitarian Universalist Church, 5001 Pennsylvania Avenue, Boulder, CO 80303, on Saturday, March 9, 2024 at 11:00 a.m.

The family is very grateful to Sunrise Memory Care Facility for their kindness and care of Anne following her stroke.
