Gertrud Goping, age 91, passed away in Louisville, Colorado on April 10, 2019. She was born and raised in Haan, Germany. She immigrated to the United States in 1961, settling first in Chicago, where she developed her specialized skills as an electron microscopist and met her husband, Henry. They moved with their children to Paris, France for a few years, then returned to the U.S., where she worked for over 30 years at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and then at USUHS (U.S. military medical school), both located in Bethesda, Maryland. Gertrud was a long time member of the German Lutheran Church in Bethesda, and she was considered a professional knitter, dedicating herself to the craft for over 85 years.
Gertrud is survived by her daughter, Karina Plocek, son-in-law, Paul Plocek, four grandchildren, Nina Plocek, Everett Plocek, Karina Goping and Paulina Goping, her three younger brothers, Wilhelm Hess, Hans Hess and Dieter Hess, her sisters-in-law, Gerda Hess and Gaby Hess, and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Gertrud was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Goping, her son, John Goping, her sister, Hanna Walczuch and her parents, Ida and Wilhelm Hess.
Services will be determined at a later date.
